October found me back in the saddle so to speak with working with our Youth Group and I have to tell you it’s a great place to be!! We have amazing teens with amazing gifts and I can’t wait to work with them in 2016!!!
Diving into technology has been challenging with these guys however we have a youth group Facebook page (thank you Kaleb) that has helped a lot– you are all welcome to join us to see what we are up to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/gladstonecovenantyouth/
Summer of 2015 was our big adventure to CHIC. 6 students attended the University of Tennessee for an over the top Worship, Prayer and Fellowship experience. The amazing job the Covenant does to put on this event is astounding. God is literally everywhere, in the people, events and experiences. Kaleb Harris and I were along for the amazing ride and I could not have had a better co-leader.
Fall was a time to get the teens back together after their summer activities. Reconnecting and touching base with all of them has been a blessing to me that I have really enjoyed. It has been a big challenge and change for me to have 7th-12th grade rather than just high school. We have spent quite a bit of time “getting to know you” by playing games and having group discussions. We have had fun gathering for Pizza and games and attending a hay ride and bonfire at “the farm” this fall.
We have spent the fall/winter talking a lot about music and what kind of influences it has on us. Music is hugely tied to teen’s identity and so we also had some good talks about where our identity comes from. We explored several different worship styles for youth group and had several of the youth step out and work with our worship teams to praise and glorify God. We have some very talented teens and my hats off to them for having the courage to share their gifts and talents with us!!
We have also explored what it means when Jesus said: “you, follow me”. From this we reached out to help host the New Year’s family get together and Teen Party afterward. It was really great to see the generations get together for prayer and worship!!
The New Year brings us to some housecleaning both inside and out. We are studying Making things New for January and Love: what’s that? for February. Exploring topics which the teens voted on in a survey in November.
We are gearing up for our big winter event…One Life: the high school retreat at Covenant Point in February. We will be doing a fundraiser for the annual meeting to help with scholarships for this. Also this month we will be painting the youth group and renaming it—which the kids are really excited about. We are in search for new “used” couches for the room if you have any please let me know :>)
I feel very blessed to be back working with the youth. Thank you for this opportunity. I am excited to see what God has in store for us in this upcoming year both individually and as a team. I love connecting the generations so if you have an idea for me of the teens and adults working together please let me know.
A huge thank you to all of you who have helped out. I especially want to thank Bob White for being my indispensable prayer partner, Kaleb for his help with Chic and this summer, Brandy and Jeff Torvinen for their help with New Year’s, and Betty Nyberg and Jill Moloney for their help with the teens and music.
